"A Serenade, a hymn of sorts, at most a small potion for the soul." - ND
“Occasionally I like using a particular lyrical style which, in this case, lent itself naturally to telling the story of a guy (Cyrano de Bergerac) who woos his woman with poetry.” - ND
Cyrano de Bergerac is a play written in 1897 by Edmond Rostand. Although there was a real Cyrano de Bergerac, the play is a fictionalisation following the broad outlines of his life.
Cyrano de Bergerac, is a skillful swordsman and a very clever poet, who is in love with his cousin Roxana, but does not dare to confess the great love that he has, because his face, apparently has a physical impediment, and that Cyrano has a very big nose, and he believes that with that appearance he will not be able to fall in love with Roxanne...
She once meets Christian, and falls madly in love with the handsome cadet who serves in the Cyrano regiment and has no more appeal than his physique, as he is a simple but very handsome boy and asks his cousin for help to conquer him. Cyrano, despite his feelings towards Roxanne, promises to help her.
She wants Christian to write her love letters, but he feels unable to do so because he does not have the wit to express his feelings in words.
Cyrano offers to write the letters for Roxanne, who will sign Christian, and so the young woman will feed a love for the cadetecada once greater, because the letters in the verse of Cyrano are wonderful, he knows how to choose the appropriate words and touch the most intimate parts of the heart of the young girl in love.

Cyrano De Bergerac, the eponymous poet hero of Neil Diamond is captured beautifully in Neil's Longfellow Serenade. The song featured on the "Serenade" album, regarded as one of Neil Diamond's finest, where Neil himself dug deep into his inner being to create musical masterpieces. The video presented here encapsulates how Cyrano woo'ed Roxanne through the devious use of rhyme. The images are stunning, weaving little tapestries to tell the story within the song, and takes the viewer on a journey of exquisite aural and visual pleasure. Once again Doug has served up another video delight to sit alongside the many others he has entreated us with. Thank You.

🦋 while Play Me is my very favorite Neil Diamond song, Longfellow Serenade is the magnificent song that launched me into the magical world of Neil Diamond. When he performed this song at the famous Fox Theatre in Atlanta, I was hooked. It was 1976 and a few weeks later I would enter his world again in Las Vegas. Then it was the Bicentennial week, July 2-5. I walked on a cloud those days in Vegas. Neil's music has delighted me for 6 decades and I am still amazed and still love him! Beautiful video, Doug! Always a delightful experience .

Beautiful. It's funny how we sometimes hear differently from what the singer sings! I always heard .." incumbent as we lay beside the sleepy glade". Now I see the lyrics and it's not all those words. But whatever the words , the music and singing are just fabulous!

I was introduced to this music many years ago by my late Brother in Law who suffered from very noisy neighbours. Usually on a Sunday morning when they were recovering from their hangovers ( he was a shift worker and they just didn't care ), he would start up his very powerful radiogram, gently at first and then gradually build up 'till close on our ears bleeding. This with it's bass line would rattle his neighbours teeth until they got the idea to respect those on night shift. He died several years ago and due to the circumstances of his death we never got to say goodbye. Rest In Peace Bob.

Wow. Again NDC produces another gem💎💎. The introduction of Neil's hero, Cyrano, combined with the image of Neil as a young teen Carrie's him through his desire to excel at sabre fencing to be in alignment with his hero only to further his likeness by writing beautifully written words of song for these misfit poets 'for I was lonely, and she was lonely'. The imagery of the horoscope entwined with the clock, along with the 'weave your web of rhyme' depicting the lady among the web is so touching and timeless. So well done, as usual, and so appreciated. Thank you.
Thanks very much for your erudite comments Donita, much appreciated. The idea for a video for this song first broached me approximately 3 weeks ago. At that point, I had no idea as to the direction it would take. I wanted to do this magnificent song the justice it so deserved. Then I remembered the introduction that Neil gave it in his 'Thank You Australia' concert in 1976, and how it enlightened me and I guess, millions worldwide, to the true meaning and reference of this song. Armed with that arsenal, the ideas flowed in torrents. I am quite satisfied with the result. Best wishes, Doug

The "Treasured Memories" section is filled with many great stories, but my favorite has always been the one by Rachel Charles! Her husband and uncle were part of the "Beautiful Noise" that we all enjoy when listening to Neil's music! They were all part of the Neil Diamond Family! That is the ultimate "Treasured Memory"...
